Our inspiration to begin the student-run program was a desire to connect with our area youth by providing innovative educational opportunities. The purpose is to teach wise savings habits at an early age. Students are taught it is important to make consistent deposits as even small amounts add up over time. They are also taught hands-on, real-world employment skills by working in the student-run branch.
A fully functioning branch is provided within the school during breakfast or lunch hours. There are multiple positions within the student-run branch to help teach them real-world work experiences such as Tellers, Member Service Representatives, Branch Managers, Assistant Branch Managers and Marketing positions.
Any student within the school can open an account, savings (earning double dividends) and checking, and are provided with an ATM card (ages 10 and older). During the operating hours of the branch, student members can make deposits or withdraw money from their accounts. Each student member receives a membership card, transaction register to help keep track of their balance and a small packet to keep their account items organized.
Currently, there are 20 schools in our area with student-run branches; Northview, Southview and Westview Elementary Schools , Jackson Middle School and Jackson High School, all located in Jackson.
